Ruggeri Winery: Valdobbiadene Prosecco D.O.C.G. is finally Extra Brut

Following the recent change to production regulations, Ruggeri is proud to announce Saltèr, a Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G. in an Extra Brut version for the very first time. With this new wine we once again demonstrate our love for the land and our constant desire to experiment with the potential that Valdobbiadene offers. We had already produced a sparkling wine with residual sugar of around 4.5 g/l in the early 2000s, and now we have become one of the first wineries to release a Valdobbiadene Prosecco D.O.C.G. Extra Brut to market.

The range of D.O.C.G. wines that we offer is growing and with the arrival of “Saltèr”, our historic company from Valdobbiadene has added an Extra Brut to our list of D.O.C.G. wines. At the beginning of August, the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies and Tourism approved changes to the production regulations for the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G., allowing wines to be produced in the Extra Brut category. At Ruggeri, we have made enhancing the prestige of the Glera grape our stated mission, and we were among the first to believe in the Extra Brut version of Prosecco Superiore. Indeed, at the beginning of the new millennium, we had already created a sparkling wine with a residual sugar of about 4.5 g/l produced using Glera grapes. The new sparkling wine we have launched once again testifies to our great foresight and spirit of innovation.

Il “Saltèr” fra tradizione e leggenda

The Saltèr is the Valdobbiadene regional dialect form of the word Saltner, the name given to an ancient character who, in past centuries, was elected by rural communities in northern Italy to safeguard the harvest in the vineyards. To carry out this work, the Saltner had to dress in a particularly showy and eccentric way; in addition to wearing a leather outfit, his neck was adorned with rattles, feathers, crosses and pendants made from animal teeth.

A young man was chosen to be the Saltner based on his good qualities, and he would carry out this role with pride and honesty, demonstrating a great sense of belonging to the community and a deep bond with nature. Ruggeri Winery’s Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G. Saltèr fits perfectly into the range of D.O.C.G. wines we offer, confirming our attachment to our land and helping to define the identity of this historic winery that for nearly seventy years has been committed to safeguarding and raising the profile of Valdobbiadene.

Valdobbiadene Prosecco is Extra Brut for the first time
