Born in Valdobbiadene
It’s impossible not to be enchanted by the beauty of the gentle hills that surround Valdobbiadene, an area which became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2019.
It’s a fascinating region where the toil of the winemakers has contributed to the creation of a unique landscape, one that deserves to be protected, championed and safeguarde, where soils that first formed in the sea contribute to the taste of the wines. It’s in the very heart of this area that the fortuitous combination of soil, temperature range and natural breezes has given birth to Prosecco Superiore DOCG. The vineyards that adorn these hillsides are also home to many centuries-old vines – vines which embody the true essence of this land. These are living sculptures, resolutely bearing their fruits that tell the story of more than a hundred years of history.
In symbiosis with nature
Our love for our land spurs us to pursue initiatives aimed at enhancing the natural environment, as well as exploring new avenues in Valdobbiadene’s wine heritage.
Over time, our innate familiarity with the vineyards, coupled with our deep connection to our land, have honed Ruggeri’s sensitivity towards both community and nature. This has driven us to develop projects and partnerships that preserve the natural heritage of this unique land.
Certified quality
With a spirit of innovation and foresight, together with our growers Ruggeri adheres to the SQNPI protocol (Italian Integrated Production Quality System) which seeks to reduce the use of processes, treatments and fertilisers, and promote the use of active ingredients which tend to remain in the soil for a shorter time and thus have a reduced impact the ecosystem. The program involves not only work in the vineyard, but also in the winery, with monitoring of both the carbon and water footprints. Ruggeri also adheres to the Equalitas Sustainable Winemaking standard which sets out approaches to sustainability based on three pillars: social, environmental and economic.
The Herbarium
Ruggeri commissioned research that has documented the presence of 116 different varieties of local wild plants and flowers. This culminated in the creation of a unique Herbarium, presented in 2023 at the Scuola delle Erbe exhibition of native plant varieties of the Cartizze area, held in Saccol di Valdobbiadene. The Herbarium has resulted in the creation of a valuable collection of photographs.
Sustainable pruning
For three years now Ruggeri has partnered with vine-pruning consultants Simonit&Sirch on a sustainability project that provides training to growers. Lessons take place in the classroom and vineyard and aim to teach the most virtuous approaches to vineyard husbandry – techniques that fully respect the vines and best guarantee and preserve the health and famed longevity of these plants.
Villa dei Cedri
At Ruggeri, we firmly believe in the importance of enhancing the value of our region. To this end, we’ve financed conservation and promotional work on the Cordana stream which flows through the gardens of Villa dei Cedri, a historic building and former factory in the centre of Valdobbiadene, and which is today home to the UNESCO office. During excavation work stone walls were unearthed which have become a draw for visitors to the villa. The villa and its gardens have also once again become a venue for a range of local cultural events.
Cartizze
This is the Grand Cru of Prosecco Superiore. Cartizze is a small parcel of land covering just 107 hectares located in the heart of the splendid hills of Valdobbiadene. Ruggeri has always focused great attention on this area.
The optimum slope aspect, unique soil composition comprising mainly limestone, clay and sandstone, and perfect breezes assure unique wines of the highest quality – wines which fully embody the hallmark fruity and floral aromas, and elegance, freshness and smoothness of the Glera grape. Of all the grapes harvested in the Cartizze area, Ruggeri presses the highest percentage vinified by any single company.
